Westport, NY, December 5th, 2024- Champlain Area Trails (CATS), an accredited land trust founded in 2009, will present a “Luminaria Walk” on Saturday, December 21st, 2024 at the Twin Valleys Outdoor Education Center in Westport/Lewis. This event will celebrate the winter solstice, the shortest and darkest day of the year.

After a successful inaugural event last year, CATS invites everyone to experience the magic of a self-guided walk (or snowshoe) along a short trail illuminated by the warm glow of candle-lit bags.

"The Luminaria Hike is a wonderful way for people to come together and celebrate the beginning of winter here in the Champlain Valley," said Chris Maron, Executive Director of CATS. "It's a chance for us all to connect with nature, enjoy the peaceful ambiance, build community, and create lasting memories with family and friends."

The event will take place from 4 to 8 p.m., with the trail lit by the soft glow of luminaria bags and candles, offering participants a magical experience under the winter sky. After the walk, attendees can gather around a cozy bonfire, roast marshmallows, and indulge in hot cocoa while soaking in the serene natural surroundings.

CATS helps create community by creating and maintaining over 100 miles of trails, protecting 3,000 acres of land through direct efforts and partnerships, and hosting hundreds of outdoor education outings, hikes, and volunteer events that draw thousands of visitors annually. The Luminaria Walk is one example of many initiatives that connect people to nature and promote economic vitality in the Champlain Valley.

"We're thrilled to be able to offer this event again and provide people with a unique opportunity to celebrate the winter solstice in a truly magical way," said Maron. "We encourage everyone to come out and experience the beauty and wonder of the Luminaria Walk, CATS trails, and winter in the Champlain Valley."
